How To Rename A User Account
macOS stores individual user data in a directory called the “home folder.” Home folders can be found in the /Users directory. A home folder should match the uniqname of the user that is logging into the Mac. i.e. /Users/uniqname
If someone has recently changed their uniqname, this article will help you change their existing home folder and account name to match their new uniqname.
Note: While this tool is designed to prevent data loss and retain all user data, it might be a good time to discuss the user’s backup strategy, and make sure they have a current backup before continuing.
1. Log into the user’s Mac with the UM-Support account and current password listed in the Izzy.
Navigate to Applications -> Utilities -> Service Provider Support, and find “Home Directory Name Changer”
Click ‘Change’ to launch the name changer utility.
In the first prompt that appears, type the existing home folder that you would like to rename and select ‘OK’
In the next window that appears, type the new user account/uniqname.
The utility will now attempt to copy existing user data to a new home folder that matches the new uniqname.
You should receive a ‘Success!’ message and prompt to reboot. The Mac will automatically reboot in one minute.
After rebooting, please navigate to the O365 login window.
If FileVault is enabled, unlock FileVault with the UM-Support account and then choose ‘Log Out’ from the Apple Menu
If you do not see the O365 login window, please choose “Switch Login Window”
Log into the Mac using the new uniqname’s email address to complete the name change.
