Manually Enroll an iOS or iPadOS device in DEP

When an Apple device is purchased through approved channels, the serial number is automatically enrolled in Apple’s Device Enrollment Program, DEP.

These directions will help you manually enroll a device that is not already in DEP.

 

You will need:

  • an iPhone with Apple Configurator app

  • MWireless auto-connect configuration profile

  • Apple School Manager credentials

  • iPad or iOS device that needs to be enrolled in DEP

The setup:

  1. Save the MWireless auto-connect configuration profile to Files on your iPhone (email, Slack, etc.)

  2. On your iPhone, launch ‘Configurator’ and sign in with your Apple School Manager credentials

  3. Tap the ‘Gear’ icon in the lower left corner to access the Settings menu.

  4. In the Settings menu, under ‘Network Configuration’ settings, tap ‘Configuration Profile,’ and choose the configuration profile that was saved to your iPhone in step 1.

  5. In the ‘MDM Server Assignment’ settings, touch ‘Specific’ and then choose your appropriate MDM server. (Please ask for help if you are unsure)

Add the iOS or iPadOS device to DEP

  1. Power on the iPad or iOS device that you would like to add to DEP

  2. Continue through the Setup Assistant, then stop when you see the Choose a Wi-FiNetwork pane.

    Note: You must restart the iPhone or iPad if you go past the Choose a Wi-Fi Network pane.

  3. Bring your iPhone with Apple Configurator close to the iPhone or iPad, then do one of the following:

    • Scan the image that appears in Setup Assistant.

    • Tap Pair Manually in the lower-left corner of the Setup Assistant, then tap Manual Pairing in Apple Configurator and enter the six-digit code that appears.

    • Note: If Setup Assistant doesn’t show the pairing pane on the iPhone or iPad you want to add, return to the Home Screen on your iPhone, then tap the Apple Configurator app again.

      The serial number and other information about the iPhone or iPad are uploaded to Apple School Manager

  4. Wait for the process to complete, then tap Erase and Shut Down.

  5. The DEP enrollment is now complete, and the device can be powered on and walked through Setup Assistant and complete enrollment with the MDM server.

 

Please Note:
The iPad or iOS device has now been provisionally enrolled in DEP. This process will need to be repeated if the device is erased, restored, or otherwise reloaded within 30days. After 30days, the DEP enrollment will be permanent.
