Locking Down a Missing or Stolen Mac

Locking Down a Missing or Stolen Mac

If a Mac is stolen, or otherwise missing, you can request for it to be ‘locked down.’ The next time the Mac connects to the internet, it will immediately reboot, and lock with a passcode and message to return the missing device.

If and when someone attempts to rebuild this Mac, it will automatically re-enroll with our MDM server as 'locked down.'

  1. Submit a ticket to the Mac Engineering team by emailing izzy-support@umich.edu with the serial number or link to the Mac in Izzy that you would like to be locked.

  2. If and when the Mac connects to the internet, it will immediately reboot, and lock with a passcode.

  3. Rebuilding the Mac will still result in a ‘locked down’ configuration

  4. If the Mac is ever recovered, please contact the Mac Engineering team to have the lock removed.

Additional Information:

  • FileVaulted Macs that go missing, rarely reconnect to the internet and remain locked.

  • A Mac is not fully booted while at the FileVault unlock screen, and cannot receive unlock commands or password resets/unlocks.

  • FileVaulted Macs, and all Macs equipped with a T2 security chip or Apple Silicon are encrypted at rest. Formatting the storage on these Macs will destroy the cryptographic keys and all hopes of recovering data.
