Manually Enroll a Mac in DEP

Macs that are purchased through approved channels are automatically enrolled in Apple’s Device Enrollment Program (DEP.) If a system is purchased from outside these channels, it will need to be manually enrolled. These instructions will help you permanently add a Mac to DEP and avoid manual enrollment when the system is reloaded.

To get started, you will need:

Setup:

  1. Contact the Izzy team to confirm that the serial number you are working with is not already in DEP

  2. Once confirmed, the Izzy team will create an Apple School Manager (ASM) account for you, and email the credentials to your umich email.

  3. Using the iPhone, open the AppStore and install “Apple Configurator

  4. Launch Apple Configurator on the iPhone and log in with your ASM credentials

  5. If you’re adding a Mac portable, connect an Apple branded network adapter, and plug the Mac into a power source so it does not go to sleep during the process

  6. Perform an ‘Erase Mac…’ or otherwise erase and install the latest version of macOS. If the Mac is brand new out of the box and never completed the Setup Assistant, you do not need to reinstall macOS and can proceed.

Add the Mac to DEP:

  1. Start up the Mac

  2. Select the language in Setup Assistant, click Continue, then stop when you see the Country or Region pane.

(Note: You must restart the Mac if you go past the Country or Region pane.)

  3. With Apple Configurator open on the iPhone, bring your iPhone close to the Mac, then do one of the following:

    • Scan the image that appears in Setup Assistant.

    • Click Pair Manually in the lower-left corner of the Setup Assistant, then tap Manual Pairing in Apple Configurator and enter the six-digit code that appears.

  4. The serial number and other information about the Mac are uploaded to Apple School Manager

  5. Wait for the process to complete, then click Shut Down to turn off the Mac. Do not turn the Mac back on until instructed by the Izzy team.

  6. After enrollment is complete, the Mac will be provisionally enrolled in DEP. If this Mac is erased or otherwise reloaded within 30days, this entire process will need to be completed again.
