Associating Backup Archives with a New Crashplan Account

Associating Backup Archives with a New Crashplan Account

Issue:

Need to move a device’s backup archive from one Crashplan account to another.

Resolution:

Crashplan does not support moving archives to different accounts because the device’s encryption is tied to that logged-in user-account. Follow these steps to do the work by hand and associate the backup archive to a new or different Crashplan account.

  1. Uninstall the Crashplan app.

  2. Delete the following directory from your computer.

    1. Linux: /var/lib/crashplan

    2. Mac: /Library/Application Support/Crashplan

    3. Win: C:\ProgramData\Crashplan

  3. Reinstall the Crashplan app

  4. Log-in with the new Crashplan-provisioned Umich account email address. (uniqname@umich.edu or groupname@umich.edu)

  5. Update the backup paths in the Crashplan app if you were backing up more than just the user directory.
