macOS -- How to convert a "Standard" (non-admin) account to an "Admin" account

For macOS Monterey and under:

  1. Open “System Preferences” from under the apple menu.

 

2. Open the “Users & Groups” System Preference.

 

3. Unlock the System Preference with the “UM-Support” account.

 

4. Select the “Standard” user and then check the box that says “Allow user to administer the computer” and restart the computer when prompted.

 

5. That’s it!

 

For macOS Ventura and up:

  1. Open “System Settings” from under the Apple menu. Scroll down and select “Users & Groups”:

  2. Find the “Standard” user you want to promote to Admin and click the circled “i” icon next to their account.

  3. Toggle the slider for “Allow this user to administer this computer”:

  4. You will be prompted to enter administrator credentials and should use the current UM-Support account and password:

  5. Restart the computer when prompted after that:

  6. That’s it!
