What to do if "Create a Computer Account" fails

On occasion, the @home process will have a problem at the “Create a Computer Account” screen (Step 8 in our instructions) where after hitting “Continue” on that screen, there will be a *very* long pause and then a “Computer account creation failed”/“Try Again" dialog box will come up:

This seems to happen rarely, but — anecdotally — more often during 1-5 p.m. in the weekday afternoon than any other times.

IF THE USER GETS THIS DIALOG BOX — do not have them “Try Again” — that won’t do anything useful.

WHAT TO DO INSTEAD:   At that “Failed/Try Again” screen, have the user power the computer off and power it back on.

It will reboot to the normal umich login screen and they should be able to log in to continue the rest of the normal process.   The login at that point may take a bit longer than usual, but it should log in.

(On even rarer occasions, it may need to be restarted *a second time*, but it should definitely log in after that.)

IF THE USER DID CLICK “TRY AGAIN”:    What this does is create additional accounts in Users & Groups ending with “1” or “2” (or more depending on how many times they clicked “Try Again”)    If they did that, when you are doing your Day 1 with them, please have them delete those extra accounts in the “Users & Groups” System Preference to clean them out.
