MiWorkspace Windows Office 365 ProPlus Deployment and Microsoft Project and Visio

This is an overview of the installation behavior of Office 365 ProPlus when deployed to devices that have either Microsoft Project or Microsoft Visio installed.

Environment

Issue

Visio and Project 2010 and 2013 are not compatible with the 64-bit Office 365 ProPlus deployed by MiWorkspace. [Note: as of Oct 2020 Microsoft 2010 versions are not supported and can not be installed on MiWorkspace / PaaS devices. Microsoft 2013 products will be unsupported starting April 2023.]

Project and Visio 2016 are compatible with Office 365 ProPlus, but existing MSI-based MiWorkspace installations must be replaced with a 64-bit click-to-run (C2R) installation. Project and Visio 2019 and 2021 are only compatible with Office 365.

Resolution

Review the scenarios below for information on how existing installations of different versions of Project or Visio interact with deployment of Office 365 ProPlus on MiWorkspace/PaaS Windows devices:

Project 2010/2013 or Visio 2010/2013

Office 365 ProPus will not install until Project 2010 or 2013 and Visio 2010 or 2013 are uninstalled.

MiWorkspace prevents installation of Office 365 ProPlus on these devices to prevent customers from losing access to Project and Visio. Customers must either uninstall Project and Visio or upgrade to the 2016 versions prior to installing Office 365. Keep in mind that a license is required to upgrade from a previous version to the 2016 version.

Project 2016 or Visio 2016

Existing MiWorkspace Project 2016 & Visio 2016 installations are automatically uninstalled when Office 365 is installed. Following Office 365 installation, a C2R installation of the respective Project Pro 2016 or Visio Pro 2016 will be deployed to the device automatically. It may take several hours following Office 365 installation before the C2R version installs. If the customers had Project Standard 2016 or Visio Standard 2016 prior to the upgrade to Office 365, Unit IT or MiWorkspace will need to push the 2016 C2R compatible version of that version to the machine.  The auto-installation of compatible C2R versions is only in place for the "Pro" versions of 2016.

NOTE: Hand-installed installations of Project Pro and Visio Pro 2016 will not be automatically converted to a C2R install unless the 2016 version of Visio Pro or Project Pro has been assigned to the device in Otto. Also, the C2R deployments of Visio Standard and Project Standard 2016 are only available as push deployments from Otto. Self-service deployments for the C2R versions are not available.

Project 2021 or Visio 2021

Project 2021 and Visio 2021 (Standard and Pro) should only be installed on devices that already have Office 365 installed. A license must be purchased prior to installation of Project or Visio 2021. If your unit has purchased Project or Visio Standard or Pro 2021, contact MiWorkspace at euc-win-support@umich.edu to request that those titles be enabled for deployment in Otto.
