Background Security Improvements (Apple RSR Software Updates)

Background Security Improvements (Apple RSR Software Updates)

A new feature with macOS 26, Apple has introduced quickly-needed security updates – Background Security Improvements. These updates are released between the normal “dot” updates if Apple determine they are important enough to release before the next “dot” update is available.

These updates are supposed to be automatically installed (and may need a restart of your computer) on a random schedule, but can be manually installed.

However – at this time – Managed Software Center will show these updates and take you to System Settings -> General → Software Update.

Users will not find the Background Security Improvement update in that location but it can be manually installed from System Settings → Privacy & Security -> Background Security Improvements or ignored until the next “dot” update is released (or automatically installed…)
