How to remove an extra "Data" partition on the hard disk

If “Erase Mac” was not used in Recovery to wipe-and-reload a system, it’s possible an extra “Data” partition may exist on the hard disk. While harmless, this extra partition takes up free space that the user would probably like to have available for applications or documents.

If you receive a notice from Mac Engineering that a system has an extra “Data” partition, follow these steps to remove it:

  1. Open Disk Utility

  2. Select the extra “Macintosh HD - Data” volume and click the “minus” to remove it. (It is not possible to remove the *active* Data volume while the computer is in use, so don’t worry about that!)

  1. Once removed, reboot the computer.

  2. Finally, open Service Provider Support and run an “Update Inventory with MDM”

That’s it!
