Applications that do not work with macOS Big Sur

The following list of applications either have issues launching on macOS 11.0 (Big Sur), or are still 32-bit applications and will not run on neither macOS 10.15 (Catalina) nor macOS 11. Please note that older versions of applications were not tested here – only the most current versions available in Managed Software Center were checked for the ability to launch successfully or 64-bit compatibility.

This list is current as of 5-13-2021.  This list will be updated as newer versions of these applications come out.

IF THESE APPLICATIONS ARE IMPORTANT TO YOU:   Please reach out to the vendors and ask what their timeline for Big Sur support is.

For Apple Silicon (“M1”) systems, we have additional caveats beyond this list here

Applications that currently do not launch successfully on macOS 11

  • Desktop Presenter – Currently does not install the Telestream Audio driver correctly on a clean-install (upgrades from older OSes work) – candidate for future retirement.

  • Fusion Studio – launches but just generates SPOD (spinning wheel) – candidate for future retirement as GoPro will not be updating this

  • MacSecureBrowser – reports “damaged” when launched.

  • Pyware 3D – “Can’t be opened because of a problem” – candidate for future retirement

Applications that we expect may support Big Sur in the future:

Vendor has confirmed development but no ETA for release (all are still 32-bit and do not work on macOS 10.15 either):

  • KaleidaGraph – vendor keeps promising a 64-bit version, but it’s been over a year– still available for macOS 10.14 only

  • MathType 8  – the vendor has indicated this will not ship until “by August 2021” – still available for macOS 10.14 only

No ETA / other:

  • Canon Printer Scanner Utility - some printers include this; we don't have a comprehensive list

  • CLAN - removed from the MSC catalog.

  • FrameForge Previz Studio version 4 supports Catalina, but LSA only has licensing for 3.5.

  • Preps 6 (Preps 8.4 is the current version, but it's still 32-bit).

  • Xerox "Express ScanManager"

  • Toast Titanium 18, a paid upgrade, is supposed to work with Catalina – ITAM is not purchasing this.

"Legacy" (dead) applications that will most likely never be 64-bit:

  • Adobe CS5 and CS6 applications - including the CS6 applications that get installed with a "Adobe CC Master" suite install like "Fireworks" and "Flash Builder"

  • ColorMunki Photo – still available for macOS 10.14 only

  • Coot – removed from the MSC catalog

  • DropHash – removed from the MSC catalog

  • fseventer – removed from the MSC catalog

  • Geometer's Sketchpad – removed from the MSC catalog

  • Picasa – removed from the MSC catalog

  • PopulousBundle – “JRELoadError” – removed from the MSC catalog
